Insurance Guide

Everything You Need to Know
About GigLane Insurance

GigLane uses a bring-your-own insurance model. This guide covers exactly what you need, which providers are cheapest, and how to get your dec page fast.

📋 What Coverage Do I Need?

You need a personal auto insurance policy with a gig/commercial/delivery endorsement added. Standard personal auto insurance alone won't work — you must have a delivery or TNC endorsement that explicitly covers you while working.

Minimum liability limits:

  • $50,000 bodily injury per person
  • $100,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 property damage

You also need comprehensive and collision coverage — not just liability.

Most importantly: You must add the GigLane vehicle's VIN to your policy. Coverage dates must match or exceed your rental period.

60%+ of personal auto policies explicitly exclude commercial delivery work. If you get in an accident while on an active DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Instacart delivery — without an endorsement — your claim will be denied.

A gig endorsement is a simple add-on (usually $15–$30/month) that tells your insurer you're using the car for gig work. It's the single most important thing to get right.

⚠️ Red flag: Uploading an insurance doc without a gig endorsement is the most common reason insurance gets rejected at GigLane. Don't skip this step.

Provider Issue
Root Insurance Avoid Does NOT cover gig/delivery work. App-based but delivery excluded.
Buckle Insurance Avoid Shut down in 2024. No longer operating.
Most budget providers Check first Many cheap personal auto policies exclude delivery. Always confirm endorsement exists.

Yes — Jerry is a solid comparison tool for finding affordable rates in California. However, always confirm two things before buying through any comparison site:

  1. The policy includes a delivery/gig endorsement (not just rideshare/TNC)
  2. The insurer will add a temporary rental vehicle VIN to your policy

Not all policies shown on comparison sites have these. Call the insurer directly to confirm before binding.

🚗 How to Add a Rental Vehicle to Your Policy
  1. 1 Get the VIN from your booking confirmation. GigLane sends the VIN in your booking details. You can also find it on the booking page — tap the VIN to copy it.
  2. 2 Call your insurance company (or log into their app/portal). Say: "I need to add a temporary rental vehicle to my policy for gig/delivery use."
  3. 3 Give them the VIN and your rental dates. Ask them to confirm your policy includes a delivery/gig endorsement at the same time.
  4. 4 Request your declarations page (dec page) showing the new VIN, coverage dates, gig endorsement, and your name. Ask how to get it — most insurers email it or make it available in your app within minutes.
  5. 5 Upload the dec page to GigLane. You can do this on your booking confirmation page or in the driver portal at giglane.polsia.app/guest.html.
💬 What to say: "I need to add a temporary vehicle VIN [paste VIN] and a gig/delivery use endorsement for [start date] through [end date]."

Typical timeline: same day to 48 hours. It depends on your insurer:

InsurerSpeed
Mercury Insurance24–48 hours
ProgressiveSame day (online process)
State FarmSame day to 24 hours

If your insurer is slow, call instead of using the app — phone reps can issue updated docs faster.

Usually no extra cost for adding a temporary rental VIN with Mercury, State Farm, and Progressive. The cost is the delivery endorsement itself (~$15–$30/month depending on your insurer and driving history).

Some insurers may prorate your premium for the days the rental VIN is active. Ask when you call.

⚡ What If I Don't Have Insurance?
  1. 1 Go to Progressive.com — fastest online quote and bind process for California. You can get full coverage + gig endorsement online in about 15 minutes.
  2. 2 When adding your vehicle, use your GigLane VIN (found in your booking confirmation).
  3. 3 Make sure to add the delivery/gig endorsement during checkout. It's usually listed as "rideshare" or "TNC coverage" — confirm it covers delivery apps.
  4. 4 Download your dec page immediately after purchase. Progressive typically issues it the same day.
  5. 5 Upload to GigLane via your booking confirmation or driver portal.
📌 Note: An insurance-included option is coming soon to GigLane. For now, BYO is the path — and the cheapest add-on is ~$15–20/month with Progressive.
  1. Progressive — ~$15–20/month gig endorsement. Fastest online process.
  2. Mercury Insurance — ~$27/month. Best overall for gig drivers in California.
  3. State Farm — ~$28/month. Best if you want a local agent to help.

Actual rates vary by your driving history, zip code, and car. These are typical add-on endorsement costs for a driver with an average record in Oakland.

📎 What Documents Do I Upload?

A declarations page is a 1–2 page summary your insurer generates when you start, renew, or update a policy. It is not your insurance ID card.

Your dec page must show all of these:

  • ✅ The GigLane vehicle's VIN
  • Coverage dates that include your rental period
  • ✅ A gig/delivery/TNC endorsement (or note that commercial use is not excluded)
  • ✅ Liability limits at or above $50K/$100K/$25K
  • ✅ Your name as the insured driver

Some policies include a policy terms page showing rental vehicle coverage without explicitly excluding commercial use. You can upload this instead if it clearly shows:

  • The GigLane VIN is covered
  • Delivery/gig work is not excluded

If you're unsure, call your insurer and ask: "Does my policy cover me while doing DoorDash or Uber Eats delivery?" Get the answer in writing or as a policy update.

⚠️ When in doubt, we recommend Mercury, State Farm, or Progressive — all three explicitly provide gig delivery coverage.
  • Accepted formats: PDF, JPG, PNG
  • Max file size: 10MB
  • Multi-page PDF: Supported — upload the full dec page as a single PDF

Take a clear, well-lit photo if scanning with your phone. Make sure all text is readable — blurry or cropped images will be rejected.

  • Rejected Personal auto policy without gig/TNC endorsement
  • Rejected Uploaded your insurance ID card instead of the dec page
  • Rejected GigLane vehicle VIN not listed on the policy
  • Rejected Coverage dates don't cover your rental period
  • Rejected Liability limits below minimum ($50K/$100K/$25K)
  • Review Missing comprehensive or collision coverage
💰 The $50 Rideshare Surcharge

GigLane charges a $50/week surcharge for drivers who use the vehicle for Uber or Lyft rideshare.

Driver Type$50 Surcharge?
🚗 Uber / Lyft rideshareYES — applies
📦 DoorDash / Uber Eats / InstacartNO — not charged
🛒 Amazon Flex / Shipt / other deliveryNO — not charged

Why? Rideshare (transporting passengers) carries significantly higher liability exposure than package delivery. The surcharge offsets the additional wear and insurance risk.

If you use the vehicle for any rideshare (Uber/Lyft), even part-time, the $50/week surcharge applies.

Select your primary gig type during booking. If rideshare is selected, the surcharge is automatically added to your weekly rate.
